Mental Health Days at MAF
Along with our AmeriCares grant MAF receives free Mental Health trainings and resources for staff, and clients in group trainings. These are crisis response group trainings and they can also provide individual support, they are designed for staff after a traumatic event, giving tools and support.

About the Support
MAF has an impactful offering of Mental Health trainings through our new grantor, AmeriCares, at no cost. It is a chance for MAF staff and clients to get free Mental Health trainings and support in both a group setting, or individual setting.
Carla is our girl for MAF Mental Health services out to clients and community. This particular offering is set for trauma response after the fires as training internally, and support for MAF staff and clients in group training as you see fit. It is to help us carry out our work after the stress of the fires.

- If you would like individual support, please RSVP ASAP to the 3-4:30 time slot as well, and I will secure the AmeriCares Mental Health Team after the group sessions. **You would be set for a 30 minute session between 3:00pm - 4:30pm.

Self-Care and Staff Care
Self-Care Strategies for Healthcare Workers
This self-care training covers our reactions to stress andcoping mechanisms for dealing with stressful workplace environments. The training objectives are to understand natural emotional reactions to stress and crises, recognize signs of personal and work stress, understand the health consequences of prolonged emotional distress and learn coping skills and strategies for handling emotional distress and supporting personal wellness.
Burnout: This training teaches participants about burnout, what causes it, and how to prevent it.
Resilience and Coping for Healthcare Providers: This workshop is aimed at those who play the dual role of survivor and provider following a disaster. The training covers information about stress, trauma, healthy and unhealthy stress responses in the workplace and at home, and coping mechanisms,
as well as providing resources on how to support patients and co-workers who are distressed.
Crisis and Disaster Mental Health

Disaster Mental Health Series: This 3-hour series covers the typical psychosocial phases and responses following a disaster, how to create psychological workforce resilience, and how to psychologically better train and prepare your staff for future disasters.
Crisis Series: This series provides an overview of the various types of crises that exist and how an individual may physiologically, emotionally, and socially respond to a crisis. The training thoroughly reviews various crisis intervention practices and implementation; it also examines the most vulnerable populations and assesses when an individual should seek further medical and mental health support in a post-crisis situation. The second portion of the series helps clinic staff understand the ways a patient, provider, and healthcare system may contribute to escalated workplace situations, and teaches how to manage escalated situations in the workforce. The training identifies certain behaviors from patients that may be challenging for clinic staff to manage, identifies provider and system-related issues that may impact challenging situations, and reviews a categorical approach to the type of distressed patients an individual may encounter.

Awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Participants will learn about GBV – what it is, how common it is, different types, health outcomes – and be able to identify, refer, and respond to potential GBV cases; promote safety and dignity for GBV survivors; and implement survivor-centered care.
Introduction to Trauma Informed Care: Participants will learn what Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is and its core principles and will learn how to apply TIC to patients and communities.
Psychosocial Support & Problem-Solving

Abbreviated Psychological First Aid
The Abbreviated PFA training covers the basics of how and when to provide Psychological First Aid, which is a practical, culturally inclusive, evidence-informed approach designed to reduce the initial distress caused by traumatic events. The training objectives are to understand what PFA is and is not; to understand factors influencing reactions to crisis events; to practice 8 core actions of Psychological First Aid and to plan for self-care.

Support Strategies for Healthcare Workers
This training is based on Problem Management Plus (PM+) designed by the World Health Organization; it is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and targets healthcare workers who could benefit from learning how to use the support strategies (psychosocial support, empathic communication, problem solving, etc.) in their daily work with clients, patients and the community. The training aims to create opportunities for trainees to explore patients’ psychosocial needs and build a sense of empathy toward them; to provide exercises designed to explore and resist mental health stigma and cultural stereotypes; to provide the needed knowledge and the opportunities to practice the PM+ basic helping skills; to provide the needed knowledge and the opportunities to practice the PM+ support strategies (i.e. Managing Stress, Get Going, Keep Doing, Strengthening Social Support); to provide awareness about suicide prevention (i.e. myths and facts); to create opportunities for trainees to learn about self-care and explore ways to recognize and deal with difficult feelings.
